BY Kangdi

Both 6063 and 6061 belong to the 6xxx series aluminum alloys, primarily alloyed with magnesium and silicon. They offer good corrosion resistance and excellent extrudability, but differ significantly in mechanical strength, surface quality, and typical applications.

Comparison of 6063 and 6061 Aluminum Alloys

1.Chemical Composition & General Characteristics

6063: Features a relatively purer composition with moderate strength, designed mainly for excellent extrusion performance and superior surface finish.

6061: Contains small amounts of copper in addition to magnesium and silicon, providing higher overall mechanical strength.

2.Mechanical Strength

6063: Lower tensile and yield strength, but better elongation, making it suitable for non-load-bearing applications.

6061: Higher tensile strength and load-bearing capacity, suitable for structural and industrial uses.

In simple terms: 6061 is stronger, while 6063 offers better surface quality.

3.Extrusion & Formability

6063: Excellent extrudability, ideal for complex cross-sections and thin-wall profiles with stable dimensions.

6061: More difficult to extrude, better suited for medium-complexity or thick-wall profiles.

4.Surface Treatment Performance

6063: Provides outstanding anodizing, electrophoresis, and powder-coating results with smooth and uniform appearance. It is the preferred alloy for architectural applications.

6061: Can be surface-treated as well, but the finish is generally less uniform compared to 6063.

5.Machining & Welding

6063: Good for standard cutting, drilling, and light machining operations.

6061: Superior machinability and better strength retention after welding, making it suitable for precision machining and structural assemblies.

6.Typical Applications

6063 is commonly used for:

Architectural profiles, doors and windows, curtain walls, decorative profiles, railings, furniture frames.

6061 is commonly used for:

Industrial profiles, machine frames, support structures, transportation components, equipment housings.

7.Cost & Material Selection

6063: Easier extrusion and higher productivity result in lower overall processing cost.

6061: Higher raw material and processing requirements usually make it slightly more expensive.

Material Selection Guide:

Choose 6063 for appearance, surface quality, and complex designs.

Choose 6061 for strength, durability, and structural performance.
